The Medical Council of India with the approval of the Central Government amended the regulations on Graduate Medical Education 1997 and made provision for a Single Eligibility cum Entrance Examination, namely, National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to MBBS Course in each academic year. The Medical Council of India and Dental Council of India have notified that the Central Board of Secondary Education shall be the organization to conduct the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for admission to MBBS and BDS Courses.
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for admissions to MBBS (AIIMS-UG) and Postgraduate Courses (AIIMS-PG) will be prepared by the National Council of Education, Research and Training (NCERT). The AIIMS will be the only entry route in nearly 42,000 MBBS seats in private and government medical colleges. The admissions through AIIMS are applicable from the academic year commencing from 2013-14.In every possibility, the prospered AIIMS is likely to be an extension of NEET. With AIIMS turning to be a single entrance for medical admissions, the number taking this examination is likely to go up as compared to those taking NEET.
